Why You Should Stay In This Bali Eco Resort

Bambu Indah will fulfill all your treehouse fantasies. This Bali eco resort is located just 30 minutes outside the popular tourism destination of Ubud. Don’t just take our word for it – this boutique hotel has been featured in Conde Nast Traveler, Vogue, and The New York Times for its marriage of luxury and sustainability.

Escape to the Rainforest

Escape the noise of the more densely packed tourism areas and retreat to this natural oasis. Set amongst the rainforest, the 20+ villas of Bambu Inda are made entirely from bamboo and teak. In addition, the villas are surrounded by organic gardens and natural spring pools. The property is uniquely situated on a flowing river that offers tranquil sounds to fall asleep to each night in your open-air accommodation. This place even has a bamboo elevator, fit for two, that connects the other half of the property. During your stay, take the elevator to the other side to enjoy the overlook of the green hillside and forest below.

Where Luxury Meets Sustainability

To clarify, you don’t have to be into camping to enjoy a stay at Bambu Indah. As noted above, this Bali eco resort takes a luxurious approach to ecotourism, and no detail has been spared to provide guests an unmatched experience. Upon arrival, a stunning bamboo lobby invites you to check in. Your private guide will lead you on a short 5 to 10 minute hike to your unique accommodation. On the way to our treehouse, we crossed a swinging bamboo bridge and climbed an old spiral staircase leading to our private area of the resort. But don’t worry about your bags! Your baggage will be carted off by hotel staff and waiting for you when you reach your room. Your only job is to take in the stunning grounds as you enjoy this easy, breathtaking stroll. This Bali eco resort proves that eco-friendly travel choices can be just as enticing as traditional forms of travel.

A Note about Ecotourism

If you’re not familiar with ecotourism, check out our post that provides a simple definition of ecotourism. At Baggage, we travel to fall more in love with the world. This means that we seek out accommodation and activities (like this one!) that are designed with the planet in mind.

The History of this Bali Eco Resort

Bambu Indah began as eleven Javanese (Java is another Indonesian island) homes that were brought to Bali by a couple who restored them for friends and family to visit from across the world. Today, visitors are treated as just that: friends and family. Responsible living is the very foundation of this establishment, and the owners have taken great care to ensure that every detail measures up to ethical and environmental standards. Accordingly, you will find organic bath products, LED lights and oil lamps that prevent light pollution, and fresh water that’s been filtered from the well and recycled back into the natural pools. We believe this way of life is something every traveler should experience during your time in Bali. Trust us, you want to see this place for yourself.

The Villas

This bali eco resort offers Houses that can accommodate up to four people – each with a different name and style inspired by Javanese culture. Do note, two of the villas are open Treehouses (known as “The Tents“), which offer the ultimate immersive experience. Stay in one of the tents for a night you won’t soon forget, and check sleeping in a treehouse off your bucket list!

The Treehouses

We spent just a single night in one of these remarkable treehouses – and we left wanting more. Plan to stay at least 2 nights at this eco resort. Truthfully, it’s worth 3-4 if you really want to relax, take it all in, and slow down your pace of life. You’ll fall asleep to the rain on your bamboo roof, and wake up to the birds and monkeys visible from your deck.

There are few times in your life that you will experience indoor-outdoor living like this. These treehouses have it all, from open-air bamboo bathrooms, to comfortable and spacious beds. Fresh fruit was waiting in our room, as was the all important A/C. The provided mosquito net traps the cool air at night once the A/C is on, making for the perfect sleeping temperature and a more eco-friendly cooling option. In the evening, hotel staff visit your room to prep your bed, light your oil lamp, and pull down the mosquito netting. As far as safety is concerned, rooms have a safe for valuables and the stairway to the treehouse was accessible only by a private code.

The treehouses are the most affordable–at just $100 a night–and rustic experience. Comparatively, the other properties offer varying levels of luxury and access to nature.

Other Accommodation

The Moon House is the most romantic bamboo structure you’ve ever seen – 1030 sq ft of incredible architecture and elegance. Hammocks hang over the private natural pool and are an extension of the teak floor. While the crescent shaped bamboo home is open on one side to the elements, a beautiful white canopy drapes around a small dome that encloses the large king bed.  Swing in the hammocks that hang over your private natural pool, soak in your very own outdoor tub, and enjoy the wildlife all around you.

For a more “traditional” home (meaning it has all four walls!), consider the Kuning House. Constructed in 1829, it is one of the original Javanese homes. Located centrally on the property, you’ll have easy access to all the incredible amenities on the resort. Step off of your private terrace to one of the resort pools and grab onto the rope swing for a refreshing splash into the water below.

Superior Experience

Ultimately, staying in any one of these villas is a superior experience to a typical hotel. You want to experience the peace that presides over the entire property, and allow that same peace to find a home within you. Visit Bambu Indah’s website to explore the different accommodation options and find the perfect fit for your budget and group. Whatever you choose, we think you’ll fall in love with the Balinese lifestyle at this Bali eco resort.

Onsite Restaurants

No resort is complete without authentic onsite dining, and Bambu Indah exceeds expectations yet again with not one, but two restaurants. The main restaurant, Bambu Kitchen, features an incredible menu with organic food grown right on the property. Open 6:30am-10:00pm daily, this is a true culinary experience that you cannot miss. Notably, over 75% of the food served at Bambu Indah is locally grown, and all of it is prepared by local Indonesian chefs. Meals here can meet any allergy and dietary need – the menus at both restaurants offer something for everyone.

The Poolside Bamboo Bar

Organic, Locally Grown Cuisine

For just $3, you can start your morning off with fresh juice, and for $6 you can indulge in pumpkin pancakes with cashew cream cheese and fruit. Dinner is not to be missed, as the cathedral-like bamboo ceiling becomes illuminated by candlelight. Private booths sit behind large palms and make for the perfect romantic spot to enjoy organic local cuisine. Whether you are a guest of the resort or not, this experience should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The second restaurant at this eco resort is Riverfront Warung. An open air bamboo structure, this dining choice overlooks the river and natural pools. Open from 12pm-5pm, this is the perfect spot to sip a poolside straight from a coconut. All in all, make sure you get the most of your Bambu Indah experience by trying both of these offerings during your stay.

Bambu Indah – Close to Ubud

As noted above, Bambu Indah is perfectly situated just 20 minutes outside the busy Ubud city center. As one of the most popular destinations in Bali, Ubud is known for its yoga, food, rice terraces, and jungle. This resort provides the perfect escape from the noise and energy of the city, while still close enough to enjoy many of the experiences Ubud has to offer. Moreover, Bambu Indah offers more than enough activities to entertain you. We definitely could have spent 3 or 4 day onsite to more fully embrace and appreciate nature. You’ll feel like you’ve escaped to a jungle oasis, and you won’t want to return.

What To Do on the Resort

First, start your mornings with complimentary yoga in the open air bamboo yoga pavilion. Next, spend your afternoons lounging in the jungle by the natural pools and sipping coconut cocktails. Cool off from the heat in the fresh spring fed water. Later on, reserve time at the Bambu Indah Spa and experience the wonder of the massage pods. After the sun sets, enjoy a farm to table fare from one of two restaurants right on site. Finally, retreat to your treehouse and fall asleep to the sounds of nature, alive all around you.

Bambu Indah also offers a list of bespoke experiences, including a village hike with a local guide, and a farm tour of a nearby permaculture farm. We can’t think of a single thing that would make this place more complete. It’s a perfect match for sustainable travelers and anyone looking to test the waters of green tourism.
